You know I’m obsessed with skin care and there’s simply nothing more important than protecting your skin from harmful UV rays from the sun. UVB causes burning whilst UVA causes burning. UV radiation causes ageing, pigmentation, dark spots, lines, wrinkles and increases risk of skin cancers like basal cell carcinoma, squamous cel carcinoma and malignant melanoma. High Energy Visible light is another type of light from the sun (also sometimes called Blue Light) and from LED devices can also cause ageing and pigmentation. Protecting your precious skin, your largest organ, and first line of defence in your immune system, from UV rays is rule number one of skin care.
So how do you protect your skin from these pesky rays?
Think of the 5’s.
- Slap on a broad brimmed hat!
- Slide on sunglasses with UV protection (to protect your eyes from melanoma too”!)
- Slop on sunscreen with UVA and UVB protection. Bonus points for using a tinted sunscreen which will give you HEV Blue Light protection too!
- Slip on a long sleeve top
- Seek shade from the midday sun.
Now you might be thinking, it’s October! I don’t need sunscreen right? Well actually, we do! UV rays can penetrate through the clouds and windows and still cause DNA photo-damage and photoaging.
Ok so you’re taking your hydrolysed marine collagen peptides, CoQ10 and omegas, applying your sunscreen and your skin is radiant. But maybe you’re feeling a little pale and would like a pop of colour by getting a tan? STEP AWAY FROM THE SUN BED! These cause cancer and ageing. A much safer and healthier alternative is sunless tanning with self tanner. I love Irish company Tan Organic. Products are kind to skin with added hyaluronic acid for extra nourishment of the skin.

With all of that said, don’t fear the sun and the great outdoors. There’s nothing I love more than getting out with my children and dogs but I’m just sure to slap on that hat and slop on that SPF…whilst sipping refreshing hydrolysed marine collagen peptides by Supplements Made Simple too of course.x.
